In a series of articles, VGR Equipment highlights the qualities and applications of the TopChanger XP. This seventh instalment explains how the TopChanger XP can help solve thatch problems.
Thatch – the layer of dead plant material just below the grass surface – is a well-known problem with intensively used turf. If this layer becomes too thick, it blocks the exchange of water, air and nutrients between the top layer and the root zone. The result: poor rooting, increased disease pressure and turf that lies “loose” on the soil.
Injecting
The TopChanger XP changes this by injecting sand deep into the thatch layer and the underlying profile. This dilutes the organic material, improves the capillary action of the soil and stimulates soil life. Importantly, the thatch layer is not removed mechanically, but is broken down naturally and replaced by more stable fractions.
Sustainable improvement
For the greenkeeper, this means less need for intensive scarifying, less stress on the turf and a sustainable improvement in the soil profile. The top layer becomes firmer, more even and healthier - with the added bonus of improved playing speed and reduced susceptibility to wear and tear.
